Neu St. Alban is a modern parish church on the edge of the Stadtgarten in Neustadt-Nord. It was built in 1958/59 to plans by Hans Schilling – largely from rubble bricks, including material from the demolished old opera house.

Light and concrete

The parish was created as successor to the Romanesque Alt St. Alban, which was not rebuilt; surviving furnishings were transferred here. The enclosed interior receives a warm light only through narrow coloured windows – a design recalling Le Corbusier's pilgrimage chapel at Ronchamp. The raised altar, oriented towards the congregation, anticipated the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council.
