Leverkusen Rhine Bridge

A new cable-stayed A 1 bridge in northern Cologne – an over-one-kilometre structure with a foot and cycle path, replacing a worn-out bridge from 1965.

The Leverkusen Rhine Bridge carries the A 1 – the northern part of Cologne's ring motorway – across the Rhine. The 1965 bridge could no longer cope with sharply increased traffic and is being replaced by a modern new structure.

A major project on the Rhine

The new build consists of two mirror-image structures – one per direction of travel. The river span was erected by balanced cantilevering: prefabricated segments delivered by ship were lifted into place and welded. The first structure entered service on 4 February 2024. Alongside the traffic lanes, a 3.50 m wide foot and cycle path separated by transparent noise barriers is planned – making it a future Rhine crossing for pedestrians and cyclists too.
